Overview
Sarai is a modern-day rest stop designed for delivery riders, inspired by the historical caravanserais that once provided shelter to travelers. Addressing the lack of essential infrastructure at dark stores and pickup locations, Sarai offers clean drinking water, washrooms, seating areas, phone charging stations, and weather protection. This cost-effective, modular, and easily accessible space ensures comfort, efficiency, and minimal disruption to a rider’s workflow, enhancing their overall well-being and productivity.
Reimagining Rest Stops for the Gig Economy
Delivery riders lack access to essential infrastructure at dark stores and pickup locations, affecting their comfort, health, and operational efficiency.
The absence of drinking water stations, washrooms, seating areas, device charging points, and weather
protection leads to physical strain and reduced morale. This creates a disconnect between their fast-paced work environment and the support systems they need to perform efficiently.
The design challenge is to create a cost-effective, modular, and swift-access experiential space that integrates these basic necessities while ensuring minimal disruption to the rider’s workflow. The solution must cater to their high-mobility needs, offering convenience, speed, and comfort in limited urban spaces, thereby enhancing their overall experience and delivery efficiency.
Sarai
The Sarai (or caravanserai) has its roots in ancient civilizations, particularly along the Silk Road and other major trade routes across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. These structures were strategically located at intervals where merchants, pilgrims, and travelers could stop to rest after grueling journeys. More than mere resting places, Sarais were hubs of commerce, culture, and hospitality.
In today’s fast-paced urban life, delivery riders are the modern-day travelers, constantly on the move. However, unlike the travelers of the past, they rarely find spaces designed to cater to their needs. This project, Sarai, draws from the essence of historical Sarais to create a contemporary equivalent—a haven designed specifically for delivery riders.
